Wine glasses come in many shapes and sizes and range from simple and functional to ornate and decorative. Wine glasses are a staple gift for weddings, celebratory events, and for those in our lives who we know are wine lovers. The international holiday New Year’s Eve even holds the fundamental tradition of clinking champagne glasses to ring in the new year. The use of wine glasses and vessels has spanned the centuries. Myths and stories have been dreamed up with wine goblets playing a central part. Clearly, humans as a species value wine and objects used to dispense wine.

Wine glasses are more than just decorative or sentimental. There is an actual purpose behind the way wine glasses are designed. Modern wine experts have pinpointed the elements necessary for perfect wine enjoyment; wine cooling and proper wine storage are vital. Commercial wine coolers keep wine chilled so that when you order a glass of your favorite varietal, it comes perfectly ready to sip. Wine coolers are also available for personal use. Wine decanters can be purchased to aerate certain vintages and grape varieties, further improving the wine tasting experience.

The ideal wine glass to accompany your wine selection is like the icing on the cake. If you really want to experience the wine properly, make sure you are choosing a wine glass whose shape is designed to amplify your wines fine flavors. Red wine glasses are created with long stems to keep your natural body heat from warming up the wine. Moreover, red wine glasses have wider, larger bowls to allow oxygen to aerate the wine and to promote the collection of flavors and aroma in the bowl. Often, you will see wine tasters swirling red wine in the wine glass further speeding up the effects of oxygen exposure.

White wine glasses are typically designed with a narrower bowl to reduce the wine’s exposure to oxygen. Decanters are not recommended for white wines for this reason. Too much oxygen can distort the desired flavors of the wine. White wines are best served chilled and slightly oxidized. Another type of white wine glass is the champagne flute used for champagne and other sparkling white wines. The flute is designed to minimize the oxygen exposure even further and enhances the visual intrigue of the bubbles by giving them a longer path until they reach the surface and dissipate.

The remaining type of wine glass that is readily available is the port or sherry glass. Port and Sherry have complex and fortified flavors that require savoring. To facilitate this, the Port and Sherry glasses are made with a tampered mouth designed to trap aromas within the glass. Next time you open that perfectly cooled bottle of Merlot or Pinot Noir from your wine cooler, remember to choose your wine glass wisely and you will not be disappointed.

To decant or not to decant, that is the question. Whether it is the separation of liquid and sediment or the aeration of wine, decanting can be a confusing decision to make. The word decant, or its auxiliary decanting, means to literally the separation of mixtures. People are often confused by the need for decanting and will use a decanter with the assumption that it will influence the flavor and characteristics of the wine for the better. Others use decanters because they are manufactured in many appealing shapes and sizes and can, in reality, look quite stylish. Decanters add elegance and visual appeal to wine and wine serving.

But are decanters really necessary and do they actually influence the flavor of the varietal poured within? One of the initial aspects of enjoying wine is the temperature. Wine coolers and wine storage work well to keep the wine at an ideal temperature not only for aging but for consuming. If you choose to use a decanter, you will need to make sure the wine is cooled at a slightly colder temperature because as it sits at room temperature in the decanter, the wine will warm up and may not be as desirable to drink.

Despite the intended benefits of decanters, throughout history they have been used in the serving of wine, often ceremoniously. The wine would be deposited in the decanter and then brought to banquet tables for serving. As a result, decanters became more ornate and decorative. Decanters, by design, are made out of glass or other materials that do not react chemically with the wine. It would be highly detrimental to the wine if the chemicals and elements present in the vessel had the ability to react and change its characteristics.

During centuries past, wine was made in a more rudimentary way devoid of precise instruments available today to monitor and refine the wine before the bottling process. Because of this ancient wine making method, decanters were useful to separate the sediment, which contained inactive yeast and byproduct, from the wine. Today, due to advancements in filtration systems, sediment left over in wine has been virtually eliminated. Decanters are no longer necessary for separation of sediment and liquid.

The second most common use for decanters is to aerate the wine. Exposing wine to oxygen often allows it to open up or breathe. However, it is important to remember that not all wine varietals benefit from much exposure to oxygen. Wines rich in tannins are often pulled from wine refrigeration at a warmer temperature and benefit much more from decanting to allow exposure to air. On the other hand, wines like the Pinot Noir, are best kept in the wine cooler longer and can be harmed by decanting. Keeping in mind that decanters can be aesthetically pleasing, the actual improvement to flavor and wine characteristic is minimal.
